New Zealand Federation of Commercial
Fishermen Conference and AGM

This Conference was recently held in Nelson, from the 6th to the 8th May. Leigh was well
represented with nine delegates attending.  The Shipwreck Auction was again a very
successful evening, raising over $20,000.  Final amount  yet to be notified.  Richard Kibblewhite was again the auctioneer extraordinaire, extracting sums of money from even the most wary of punters. Buyer Beware!  There were many
bewildered faces, wondering just what they had bought and how on earth were they going to get it home.  The Leigh Association was no exception to this predicament.  We are still awaiting arrival of our big purchase!  Although it is traditionally a night of fun , the seriousness of the cause is not lost on the fishermen present and they dig deep into their pockets.

The Electronic Navigation Shield was presented prior to the Shipwreck Auction. The recipient was Ron Perry of the Leigh Association.  This was a well deserved award in recognition of the contribution that Ron has made for the betterment of fishermen over many years.   Well done Ron.

The AGM was held on the Saturday morning.
There was two remits discussed.  One was from the Leigh Association, regarding lobbying for better representation at Seafic for the owner/operator catching sector of the inshore fleet.  The other remit was from Port Chalmers Association in regard to licensing of fishing vessels.  This
second remit was something that needs a lot of thought and may be brought up again next year after time for consideration.

The election of the executive committee
proceeded only after discussion of the rules regarding numbers on the committee.  In the end the committee was down by one position, meaning that there could only be five instead of six executive members.  This caused some difficulty in the voting.

Dave McIntosh did not stand for re-election this year.  We thank him for his years of dedication and commitment to the cause of fishermen.  He has been made a liaison officer.

The 2010/2011 executive committee are Doug Saunders-Loder (President), Allan Rooney (Vice-President), Tony Threadwell, Brian Kiddie,

Seafic Conference

This conference was held in Wellington on the 19th and 20th May.  The Leigh Association had three members attend .

Unfortunately there are not many fishermen that attend this conference.  It is generally all the other people in the industry that probably don’t even know a fisherman and yet it is the fisherman that is the reason that they have a job in the first place!  Therefore it is vital that the fishermen are represented by fishermen at this event.

Fuel at the Leigh Wharf

In October 2009, due to Caltex pulling out of Leigh, the association took over the running of the fuel pump at the Leigh Wharf.  Steve Paddison from the local garage, who actually owned the fuel tank, gifted it to the association.  CRT are now supplying the fuel.  It has been a steep learning curve.  Ron Perry has taken on the everyday (and night) running of it.  A big “Thank You” to Ron for his tireless efforts.  We know how frustrated he has been dealing with the
Eftpos company and all their associated problems.  Things are looking up though, we will be getting a new Eftpos company and all new software.

May the seas be calm, the fish plentiful, prices good and BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!!!
