The Leigh Commercial Fishermen’s Association Incorporated (“LCFA”) represents the interests of owner/operator commercial fishermen that land fish to Leigh Fisheries Ltd.

Our members use various fishing methods, such as bottom longline, surface longline, seine, trawl, set-nets and cray fishing. 

The ports mainly used by our members include Houhora, Manganui, Whangaroa, Hokianga, Opua, Tutukaka, Whangarei, Kaipara, Auckland, Coromandel, Whitianga, Tauranga, Gisborne, Napier, and of course Leigh, where it all began.

LCFA became an incorporated society in 1994. There are no membership fees for the individual fishermen to pay.  Leigh Fisheries Ltd. pays a monthly levy to support the association.  Without Leigh Fisheries Ltd support, LCFA would not be the active and  strong association that it is today.

LCFA is a port association of the New Zealand  Federation of Commercial Fishermen Incorporated.  The Leigh Commercial Fishermen’s Association and Leigh Fisheries Ltd pay the membership fees to join “the Federation” on behalf of its members. At present we have two members of our association on the executive committee of “the Federation”.

LCFA is a “Settlor” of Southern Seabird Solutions and has been innovative and proactive in using mitigation methods to avoid catching seabirds.

Members have been actively involved in the “FishSafe” program in partnership with NZ Federation of Commercial Fishermen, Maritime New Zealand and ACC.

Our aim is to promote and support the best interests of commercial fishermen. Whether it be supporting any event , legislation or undertaking for the betterment or wellbeing of commercial fishermen or opposing any event ,legislation or undertaking which are detrimental to the interests of commercial fishermen.  We aim to acquire information and knowledge to pass on to our members and promote and provide training courses to educate our members.  

LCFA  promote the landing of quality fish, caught in a sustainable, safe, accountable and responsible manner.
